President's Letter

Spring!  Just the thought of it makes anything else March has to throw at us easier to take.  Time to put away the flannels and sew something bright and happy!

Tomorrow is a good opportunity to do just that.  Saturday, March 21 is National Quilting Day.  To celebrate the occasion, Sandy and Terry, our Community Giving co-chairs, have organized a sew-in at the West Des Moines Library from 9:30-4:00. Come as you can or stay all day. They will have the fabric, bats, irons, etc.  Bring your sewing machine and/or cutting tools and work on charity projects.  It's a great chance to spend time with friends and accomplish some charity work as well.

Start stocking up on your pillowcases! Our April speaker is Jody Sanders, an editor at Meredith Publishing. In lieu of her speaking fee, Jody is asking for pillowcases. The cases will be donated to the American Patchwork and Quilting Million Pillowcase Challenge.  Last year we collected 597!  Are we up to the challenge this year?

Just a reminder. March is the cut-off date for being included in the Guild roster. Be sure to renew your membership, or you won't be included in the roster and newsletter subscription!  Don't miss out!

Looking forward to seeing you at the March 24 meetings.

- Karen Macon, 2015 DMAQG President
Little Quilts Silent Auction
Our small group, Sew Sew Joyful, is in charge of the Little Quilt Silent Auction at our 2015 Quilt Show. Our goal is to have a number of remarkable little quilts that will bring a fair price to sustain our Guild.

Again this year, the quilts may be any size up to 24 in. on one side or a total of 4 sides equaling 96 in. Bags, purses and totes are also welcome. We will accept little quilts from now until September 12th. We cannot wait until the September meeting.

We encourage you to show off your talents and support the guild.

If you have any questions, you may call or text Sherri Street 515-664-3996 or Sue McMain 515-865-5218.

Community Giving
We are Building Quilts to Make Friends

Wow!  What fun!  We came to the February guild meeting with our containers full of projects and you all just snatched them up and we ended with our containers empty of kits and what is even more exciting is that we filled our empty containers up with your finished projects.

You donated 24 pillowcases, 60 placemats, 17 finished twin/lap size quilts, 5 baby quilts, and 4 clothing protectors. You also completed 13 pieced twin tops, 1 baby pieced top, and quilted 2 tops ready for binding.

We checked-out 16 pillow case kits, 17 top kits to piece, 3 kits to quilt and 2 kits to bind. We also collected 2 bags, 2 boxes for the Des Moines Schools, tab tops, and 2 large bags of assorted toiletries.

We are preparing for our Community Giving Day and have 20 guild members who have signed up to donate their time.  We are excited to see how much of our donated materials that we can turn into kited projects.

We would like to thank the following members, who checked-in projects, for their time and effort:  Martha Henrichs, Nan Newell, Dueana Johnson, Margaret Simmons, Janet Westberg, Phyllis Blood, Susan Corbett, Deann Steele, LaVerna Griffin, Reta Stone, Linda Mould, Mindy Miller, Lynn Randall, Mary Jo Bonsall, Judi Smith, Sue McMain, Anita Gogerty, Sandra Rompat, Julia Shires, Gloria Overson, Marilyn Moehlm, Norma Hamilton, Diane Melendez. Jean McLauglh, Karen Spenser, Nan Earll, Doris Rumpp, Linda Strohbeck-Bergeson, Jo Anne Schnebly, Vickie Wiliams.

If we accidently misspelled your name or left you off our list email us and we will correct the information in the next newsletter.  Please send corrections to Terry Holt or Sandy Lanning.

Our Community Giving focus this year is on our Habitat for Humanity lap quilts.  These quilts are given to the home owners when they take possession of the keys. The quilts are a memento for a job accomplished.  See our website for another block pattern for you to consider using in a charity quilt.

Community Giving Sewing Day
National Quilting Day
Saturday, March 21, Let's Celebrate!

National Quilting Day is tomorrow, Saturday, March 21. What better way to showcase our talents and let the community know who we are than by celebrating with a Community Giving Sewing Day.

We will meet at the West Des Moines Library, 4000 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines. We are planning on opening at 9:30 a.m. and closing at 4:30. Please join us any time that you are available between those hours. Bring a sack lunch or travel west or east on Mills Civic for restaurants.

You can bring a project for Habitat for Humanity, (Great time for a small group to get together to plan, cut and sew a quilt) or any other community service project you are working on. If you just didn't quite get the YMCA quilt you were planning on completing done, do it now.  We'll even help you. We will also work on making pillow case kits. We will bring fabrics to choose from but if you have any fabrics (I can't understand why I chose this stuff) bring it along. We can make it wonderful!

RSVP
Just for our planning let Sandy Lanning or Terry Holt know by calling, or email if you can come.  Don't worry if your plans change we just want to make sure we have enough of everything.

The Magic of Small Group Quilting:
Building Friendships through Quilting

The theme for this year's AQS/DMAQG fall Special Guild Exhibit is "Building Friendships Through Quilting".  We are inviting each Small Group to help us highlight the work, fun, accomplishments and play of their small groups.  Ellen Kelly Smith is the contact person for the Special Exhibit and will be in touch with a representative of your small group about being part of our exhibit.

We hope you will share stories of your group and display group projects. We have heard that many of you have made some type of friendship quilt, round Robin Quilt or challenge quilt and we would love to have examples of this work for the display. We will be asking for some quilts to display at the show as well as photos and a few stories (humorous or otherwise)from your group. The committee will help with the display poster for each group so that the exhibit is coordinated.

We will need the name of your small group, along with a list of its members and a contact name and phone number. Please talk about this at your next small group meeting and be prepared to provide the information listed above by the end of April. We welcome your ideas on how to highlight the wonderful friendships that develop through our quilting together. Start talking. We know you'll have great ideas.

Please email Ellen Smith your small group members and the contact phone number.  Ellen's phone numbers are (home) 515-279-2218 and (call) 515-443-3001. Looking forward to hearing from you during the next month.
