President's Letter

Well done!  Our first meeting at the new location was a success!  Great location, great program, great participation!  Thanks to everyone for your work, cooperation, and patience!  We will work on better lighting up front, and try a different system for treats in the Fellowship area.  But all in all, things worked reasonably well for our first meeting.

Save the date!  We want to keep all our meetings at the new location, so we will move the date of the December Tea to December 12, the second Saturday.  The church is not available the first Saturday.  Since we are so good at adapting, this will give you plenty of time to schedule in the Tea.

I am making a change in the dimensions of the Challenge Quilt rules this year.  (A woman's prerogative, right?)  The quilt will be 36"x36" to allow for more ease in design.  Hopefully this is soon enough to not complicate anyone's plan.  Most of us don't start until November anyway!

The National Quilt Museum in Paducah is asking for donations for the 2015 Quilting Challenge. Quilts of any size may be donated for auction or sale, with the proceeds going directly to the museum's general fund and to promote interest in quilting.  Donations are due April 1, 2015.  I have more information if you or your small group is interested.

Looking forward to seeing you at the February 24 meetings!
Thank you,
- Karen Macon, 2015 DMAQG President

Outgoing Board Thank You Gifts

Its not too late to thank the retiring board members. Our guild meetings on February 24th will be the last time we are collecting hatchet blocks. Remember to bring your 15 hatchet blocks to the February Meeting. More details here.

Many thanks to the Board members whose time and efforts are sincerely appreciated by all.

A Note from the Treasurer
A big Thank You to everyone who has already paid their $30 for our 2015 Membership Dues. DMAQG has more than one method of receiving your payment and related information. It is all still being correlated - but the membership directory is being updated, cash is being counted and checks are being processed. Many of you registered on-line and mailed your checks to our P.O. Box, if you included a self-addressed stamped envelope a Membership Card will be mailed back to you. Those of you who registered and paid via mailed check or PayPal may pick up a Membership Card at a monthly Guild meeting. Speaking of PayPal - DMAQG is making every attempt to accommodate those members who find it easier/more convenient  to pay via PayPal but please remember one thing: Our checking account is free but PayPal charges fees for every transaction. Cash or check allows the guild to put all your dues towards guild activities.

Chris Patrick, Treasurer
Spring Retreat
The Spring Retreat committee is busy planning the DMAQG retreat April 9th through 12th at Wesley Woods Camp, near Indianola, Iowa. This is a fun, enjoyable, relaxing time to make new or renew friendships with other quilters. The fee is $140 for guild members $165 for non-members.

We can only guarantee 34 people can attend unless 44 sign up so we can rent the second room.  We already have 25 signed up. If you want to be sure and get in do not delay sending your money.  It will fill quickly.

The Retreat table will once again be set up to register at the Feb, 26th Guild meetings. I would not wait for this if you want to go! You may also find registration forms on our website to print and mail or print now and bring completed form to the meeting!

We are looking forward to this year's Spring 2015 Retreat in April!
Deb Kirby, 2015-2016 Retreat Chair and committee
Community Giving
We are Building Quilts to Make Friends

In January we collected eleven placemats, thirteen twin YMCA quilts, four pillowcases, one Veteran quilt, nineteen baby quilts, and one lap quilt.

Our members took home eighteen pillow case kits, seventeen quilt-tops-to-piece kits, seven tops to quilt, fifteen placemat kits, and two quilts to bind.

In all fifteen members checked-in projects and thirty four members checked out projects.  We are excited that some brand new members took home projects to finish.

Many thanks to the following guild members for their donation of time and effort for Community Giving in the month of January:  Jill Pickett, Judi Smith, Karen Macon, Judy D'Iapico, Linda Wilkinson, Bonnie Hamling, Rod Turner, Linda Mould, Sherri Street, Peggy Kirk, Margaret Simmons, Patrice Weber, Sue Conard, Janet Pitman, and Barb Anderson.

Our Community Giving focus this year is on our Habitat for Humanity lap quilts.  These quilts are given to the home owners when they take possession of the keys.  The quilts are a memento for a job accomplished.  See our website for a HOUSE BLOCK PATTERN that you could use in the quilt, either one or many houses.  These instructions make two 12 inch blocks.  Perhaps each member of your small group could make the two blocks and then combine into a small quilt.

Community Giving Sewing Day
National Quilting Day
Saturday, March 21, Let's Celebrate!

Mark your calendars quilter's.  National Quilting Day is coming up soon, Saturday, March 21. What better way to showcase our talents and let the community know who we are than by celebrating with a Community Giving Sewing Day.

We will meet at the West Des Moines Library, 4000 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines. We are planning on opening at 9:30 a.m. and closing at 4:30. Please join us any time that you are available between those hours. Bring a sack lunch or travel west or east on Mills Civic for restaurants.

You can bring a project for Habitat for Humanity, (Great time for a small group to get together to plan, cut and sew a quilt) or any other community service project you are working on. If you just didn't quite get the YMCA quilt you were planning on completing done, do it now.  We'll even help you. We will also work on making pillow case kits. We will bring fabrics to choose from but if you have any fabrics (I can't understand why I chose this stuff) bring it along. We can make it wonderful!

Just for our planning let Sandy Lanning or Terry Holt know by calling, or email if you can come.  Don't worry if your plans change we just want to make sure we have enough of everything.

Library News
We were pleased to see your positive response to the new library system.  For those of you who did not visit the library at the January meeting, we hope you will stop by next time.  We will continue to be open for approximately 30 minutes before and after the meetings.  Don't forget to check the website book list in advance for books you may be interested in looking at.

We will continue to accept book donations.  However, due to space limitations, we will only accept books published after 2000.  Also, we cannot accept duplicates of books already in the library.  We will not be accepting donations for the sale table, again due to limited space.
